Marijampolė – Capital of Culture of Lithuania 2018!
The city of Marijampolė is located in the southwest of Lithuania, where the land of Yotvingians and Sudovians existed. Marijampolė gained the rights of self – government, also known as Magdeburg rights, in 1792, and since then the city was developing quickly.
During Revival period, Marijampolė began to turn into a modern and European city; it underwent a lot of changes. Main J. Basanavičius square, the old town, the Poetry and Vytautas parks, historical territory of well know Rygiškiai Jonas gymnasium, the former military town was completely renovated and Marijampolė presented itself with completely new face.
Another important stage of development of Marijampolė – the seventh largest city in Lithuania – is related to investments surroundings. Sudovian products are well known in many European countries as far as the region succeeded in preserving its agricultural traditions. Furthermore, the industries have been existed here for many decades. Marijampolė has many successful metalworking, construction and food processing companies. A big step in economic development is the foundation of Free Economic Zone, which attracted the large Danish company, which is considered to be one of the biggest investments throughout the independence history.
The city attracts number of visitors because of interesting events, high quality services, amazing art projects, such as open air gallery “Malonny” created by NY artist Ray Bartkus, extremely interesting excursion the oldest Sugar Factory in Lithuania and rich history.
The cultural life in Marijampolė is very rich. Opera diva Violeta Urmanavičiūtė – Urmana organizes concerts, the masters of classical music perform in public spaces, and summer time offers live music concerts in the amazing parks.
Being the cradle of Lithuanian language and Lithuanian nation itself – Marijampolė became Lithuanian Capital of Culture 2018.
The main idea of the project „Marijampolė – Lithuanian Capital of Culture 2018“ is to arrange the unique trip through the history, reveal special cultural identity, to revive famous Lithuanian heroes, who built the foundations to Lithuania and Lithuanian language as such. Also, new and modern Marijampolė as constantly changing and lively city which has risen from unique and rich history is shown as well. Marijampolė. Lithuanian Capital of culture is closely connected to its people and beautiful 100 years of the restored Lithuania.
Revived historical personalities from the past visited the spectacular opening event. These personalities played an important role in the development of the city; also, they were the core of national revival, real Lithuanian language, writers who influenced the history of Lithuania, the third president of Lithuania, a public and cultural character, historical figures who fought for Lithuania’s independence. All of them were born or lived in Marijampole, so they are worshiped in this city.
Lithuanian Capital of Culture 2018 programme has a meaningful title „Time is changing and changes“. It will offer events that overstep the borders of Marijampolė and Lithuania.. Some activities of the programme will be accomplished by Lithuanian people who live in foreign countries. One of the famous Lithuanian artists – Ray Moon Bartkus, who lives in New York City , will organize an exhibition of its latest works in Marijampole. Ray Moon Bartkus and his colleagues will take part in 5th – jubilee – art symposium in this city „Malonny: Marijampolė, London, NewYork – migration of ideas“ painting murals in various spaces, creating breathtaking aura and by bringing some elements from the biggest world cities to Marijampolė. World-renowned opera singer Violeta Urmanavičiūtė – Urmana called the nightingale of Marijampolė together with Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra will perform a concert in the first Lithuania’s sugar factory hangar. A number of exclusive art festivals, celebrations, exhibitions, avant-garde performances and many other events will be organized in Marijampole. One of the most exceptional project dedicated to the 100 years of Lithuania’s restoration – “The Light Towers” will be presented to society. Even traditional events like celebration of City days, Music festival „Rejoice … Hallelujah“, singing poetry festival „When cherries ripen in Suvalkija“, international short film festival „White barn“, contemporary dance festival “Visions 2018” will be organized with the special spirit this year. We will hear the concert of chamber orchestra of Bergisch Gladbach (Germany) together with Č. Sasnauskas’ chamber choir and Singer Laura Latvaitytė – Zaman and plenty of other events and projects.
